Abdominoplasty - or Tummy TuckSurgery is performed typically in two to three hours, depending on size and technique, as an outpatient surgery. General anesthesia is used. Scars are typically at the pubic line and extend along the bikini line. In most patients, scars will be red or pink for six months following surgery but fade by 12 months after surgery. Bandages and dressing cover the treated area immediately following surgery. There is usually a moderate amount of pain, which is controlled by medication. There will also be drains which are removed in 5-7 days. Incisions are closed using either skin tapes or sutures. The treatment area will be numb, swollen and bruised for about 1 week and begin to subside. Healing typically takes seven to 14 days. Light exercise can be started by the third or fourth week. More vigorous sports will require four to six weeks of healing.
Most patients can return to work and social activities within 7 to 14 days.
